Everything that trended for all the right and wrong reasons in a list – now that’s what you call a nostalgia-laden end to the year. This year, too, Google has released ‘Google Year in Search 2024’ and here’s everything India was hooked to in the last year.

Google Year in Search is a fantastic initiative by Google that takes you through everything that kept netizens hooked in the last year. Revealing global and national interests, it lists down topics that range from politics, sports, entertainment, and even passing aways.

What Happened in India: Overall

The overall top five searches in India clearly reveal that India is a country that loves its sports and politics. With IPL and T20 in the first two spots, India has upheld its repute of being driven by cricket.


Movies

When we speak of films, Stree 2 topped the charts, followed by Kalki 2898 AD. Both of these movies also performed exceptionally well at the box office. Despite receiving critical as well as commercial acclaim and being applauded by viewers globally, 12th Fail and Laapataa Ladies occupied third and fourth spots respectively. The latter has also been nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

Growing disposable incomes and ease of travel arrangements abroad are leading to a rapidly growing interest in foreign destinations for Indians.

Google has recently introduced a new feature wherein users can find a song by humming its tune. Some of the most commonly searched songs using this feature are “Nadaniyaan,” “Husn,” “Illuminati,” “Katchi Sera,” and “Ye Tune Kya Kiya”.

Radhika Merchant, who married Anant Ambani, the younger son of Mukesh and Nita Ambani, in July this year, has become one of the most-Googled personalities in India. The lavish wedding celebrations saw a star-studded guest list, including top political leaders, Bollywood stars, and business tycoons. The celebration went on for days and across many different exotic locations. Her looks, outfits, and jewellery were the talk of the town for a very long time, indeed!


What fashion trends went VIRAL?

Google Year in Search also highlights that trends and style advice were hot topics among Indian fashion enthusiasts. Athleisure, vintage clothing, capes, and layering emerged as the most-searched style trends. Users were also curious about the return of older styles, with “Are skinny jeans back in style?” topping the list of fashion comeback queries.
